Common Waterbed Maintenance

A question always asked by waterbed owners, or people considering buying a waterbed is how often they have to change the water that is in the waterbed mattress.

The simple answer is that the water never needs to be changed. Of course if you are moving, or relocating the bed and mattress then it would need to be changed. You would have to drain it if the there was a leak to repair, remove or replace a part, etc.

So how do you keep the water clean and fresh you ask? This is also quite a simple procedure, adding a special conditioner made for this purpose should be added at least once every six months. This is for the free flow mattress. If you have a baffled waterbed mattress there are other special conditioners you must use.

Be sure to keep the surfaces of your waterbed mattress vinyl clean. You should purchase vinyl cleaner which has been recommended by the waterbed dealer. Keeping the vinyl treated will help to keep your vinyl soft, which will in turn help to prevent or minimize mattress cracking.

If your waterbed mattress develops a leak by a puncture, rip or tear, it can usually be repaired with a vinyl repair kit. It is wise to purchase this kit when you purchase your waterbed. You should keep a mattress cover and pad over the top of your mattress, especially if you have pets.
