
It is quite common for Waterbeds to end up mold growth on mattress pads and other bedding.
This leads to bacterial growth which will reside in the mattress itself or on it. You do not need to worry though, with the proper safeguards and cleaning solutions available today it can be cleared up.
It is imperative that you add a waterbed conditioner while you are filling up the mattress. The Bacteria can grow within hours. You will want to add the conditioner at least once every six months. It will not harm your mattress if you do it more often but that is your choice.
You should also use a shock treatment made for this purpose, and follow the directions on the labels.
Be sure to clean your mattress often. Clean the sides as well, not just the top of the mattress. You might also want to put dryer sheets around the mattress and in its corners. This can help maintain a fresh smell. Some people find that also using baby powder in these areas works very well.
